Use the CSEFEL Social/Emotional Pyramid for managing early childhood classrooms to avoid negative behaviors.
- Teachers will be able to understand how social/emotional strategies and efficient classroom organization can curtail negative behavior and create a positive classroom environment.
- The children will benefit from a more effective classroom atmosphere that encourages positive behavior and a sense of community
Participants will be able to:
- Recognize good classroom set-up strategies.
- Identify social/emotional strategies in early childhood for all learners and how those strategies stimulate brain function and encourage a sense of community.
- Practice positive commenting for a constructive classroom atmosphere.
- Receive handouts describing the Social/Emotional Pyramid and instructions on its use.
- Create classroom materials to assist in social/emotional development (where requested).
The workshop will focus on creating classroom environments that help children maintain a positive outlook and that curtail negative behaviors. Part of the discussion will cover how to include ELL and special needs children in using these strategies, as well as how they enhance brain development. The workshop is organized around the Social/Emotional Pyramid developed by CSEFEL (Center on the Social/Emotional Foundations for Early Learning) and the research-based strategies that can be incorporated into the daily schedule. The presenter will report on his participation in integrating these teaching methods in a large Head Start program and the positive results that occurred. Participants will discuss how to build positive relationships, how to set up positive environments, how to teach social/emotional strategies and when to do behavior interventions. Participants will also role-play how to teach friendship concepts to children. As the participants look at slides of functioning classrooms, the discussion will include how efficient classroom organization can assist in curtailing negative behaviors and set up a positive classroom environment.
The workshop will also include hands-on materials for organizing a positive classroom that curtails negative behaviors.
